Canaima
The Guyanese Shield holds contrasting landscapes, from
coastal plains to solid walls and tepuyes extensions (unique
rocky formations in the world) which keep continuity with
the Venezuelan Guayana orography. The oldest geologic
formation in the planet and one of the most important
biodiversity reservations in the world are found there. It
constitutes, together with Amazonas one of the most
important lungs in earth.
Canaima covers a 3 million hectares surface. It keeps very
peculiar natural characteristics: natural resources with an
infinite variety and unbeatable landscaping values, key
elements that transform it into one of the most beautiful
natural marvels in the world. Its landscape rounds in three
fundamental axes: forests, rivers and the imposing tepuyes.
These last ones are table like formations with high
tablelands and plateaus, which are known by this name, since
the word "Tepuy" means "hill" in indigenous language. A
world's unique flora is found on top of these Tepuyes, and
this is, due to the little knowledge achieved about it, of
great importance for the scientific investigations.
This National Park is both one of the country and world's
most fascinating and interesting places, what has
transformed it into one of the most visited by foreign
tourists. It has numerous places of interest and it is
divided by two sectors: the eastern and the westerner.
It is recommended for those who like adventure tourism or
simply like to rest in an exotic place. It has different
categories camps to fit all budgets, and for the enjoyment
of the most adventurous ones, it offers from soft trips for
those that just count with a single half-day, to the ascent
of the biggest Auyantepuy for what is needed to be in good
physical condition and be able to spend a minimum of one
week in the area, because this is a trip for "extreme" ones.
Other half-day trips in the area are, among others, the Caño
Moroco walk, trips to the Orquídea Island, the Yuri and Sapo
Falls as well as the Canaima Lagoon journey. |
