First day: We leave in the morning from
Cd. Bolivar to Kavac. The flight will take about one and a
half hours and offers you a spectacular view of the Gran
Sabana with its table mountains and rainforest. We will fly
over Auyantepuy, the table mountain from which the highest
waterfall on earth - Salto Angel - drops about 979 m deep.
Finally we land in the indian village Kavac at the foot of
Auyantepuy.
Walking for about half an hour we reach a
small creek in the forest. Walking or swimming upstream we
reach a 20 m high waterfall with a natural pool at the foot
of it. Here you can swim in refreshing clear water. Behind
we find the cave which despite its name is a deep gorge.
We return to the camp where we have
dinner and sleep in hammocks (with mosquito nets) or tents.
Kavac Camp - Kavac cave
Second day: After breakfast at 8:00 am we
leave Kavac in a four wheel drive vehicle to the Kamaracoto
Community of Kamarata. After about 30 minutes we arrive to a
fluvial port on Akanán River. Here we get on board of the
dugout canoes heading with outboard motors and head towards
Iwana Merú Camp. Lunch and dinner at the camp. We sleep in
hammocks with mosquito nets.
Third day: Our departure is at 9:30 am.
Still on the Akanán River we stop at Carrao Camp. Due to
rough rapids we get out of the boat to walk for a half an
hour through the savanna while our boat drivers steer the
canoes down the dangerous part of the river. We catch the
boat further down before Rio Akanán flows into the Carrao
River. Lunch is at Kuay Camp, here we can swim if the level
of the water permits it. Afterwards we continue to Arenal
Camp where we arrive at around four o'clock.
Fourth day: We continue our trip on the
Carrao River to the mouth of the Churún River, it has
several rapids and we go up stream towards Ratoncito Island.
After having lunch and a rest we climb
for 45 minutes to a fantastic view-point to see Angel Falls.
If the water level is not too high we can
swim in a natural pool which is almost at the base of the
falls. Once down at Ratoncito camp we have dinner and spend
the night in hammocks.
Fifth day: After breakfast we go down the
Churún River until we meet again the Carrao River. We get to
another waterfall. Salto El Sapo is beautiful and unusual in
that you can walk under it having a refreshing shower.
Underneath there is the Laguna de Canaima
with naturally dark water and palm trees in it.
In the afternoon we fly back to Ciudad
Bolívar or Santa Elena. |
