Discovering the South

Day 01 We depart from Puerto Ordaz at 9:00 after breakfast. We head towards the south of Bolivar State. We pass by the small towns of Guasipati and El Callao, visiting the gold mine of El Peru and maybe some of the gold shops in this second village. We continue our trip down to the south stopping in Tumeremo, another mining town where we will have lunch, and then we continue to El Dorado, Las Claritas and km 88. Next stop is at Piedra de la Virgen (Virgin's Stone) for 15 minutes, the entrance of Canaima National Park. After driving through Lema Range (jungle) for approximately 42 km suddenly the open savanna emerges. It is the beginning of the Gran Sabana. Thirty kilometers further south we will arrive at the Kamoirán Rapids tourist camp where we have a welcome drink, dinner at the camp's restaurant and stay over night (beds and mosquito nets).

Day 02 Breakfast at 8:00 am. Setting out at 9:00 am, we head along a dirt track to the indigenous hamlet of Liwo-Riwo on the banks of the River Aponwao. After we had a cold lunch at about 12 o'clock we cross the river in dugout canoes and walk for roughly forty five minutes to the thundering Chinak Merú waterfall. We will be able to see the impressing 105 m high falls from various angles. A smaller very romantic waterfall in a nearby forest provides the perfect opportunity for a swim and a rest. At 4 o'clock we return to Liwo-Riwo and continue from here to the tourist camp of Chivatón where we will eat and sleep in beds with mosquito nets.

Day 03 After an early breakfast, we visit the indigenous Pemón village of Kavanayén, where the oldest and most beautiful Franciscan mission of the Gran Sabana is situated. We then return along the same road and reach the waterfalls of Toron Merú, 17 kilometers north of the dirt road. Here we will have lunch and swim. In order to reach the Kama Merú waterfall we go back again to the main road and head south for 50 km. There is a camp near the amazing waterfall, which is run by Taurepán people, who belong to the Pemón tribe. Here we will have dinner and stay over night (beds and mosquito nets).

Day 04 After breakfast we proceed south and weather permitting we will be able to admire the Table Mountains of Wadaka Piapo, Yuruaní, Ilú, Matawí and Roraima. We stop for lunch at the handsome multi-step cascade Arapán Merú and then continue to the natural bathing pools Suruape. Here we can swim and slide down the up to 40 m long natural stone slides. Further south we get to the wonderful 7 m high and 100 m wide Arapena Falls (Salto Yuruaní) and then to Jasper Creek (Quebrada de Jaspe), a small and faint waterfall with its truly amazing intense orange-red color of pure jasper rock. In the late afternoon we reach Santa Elena de Uairén .Dinner and overnight.

Day 05 Alter breakfast w ego to visit a small town at Brazil’s border called “La Linea”. Afterwards we go to the airport to catch a flight to Kavac. We will fly in a small Cessna 206 with the capacity for 5 persons. We land in Kavac camp which is located in Kamarata valley at the south of Auyantepuy. Once we change clothes (bathing suit) and with a camera in the hand, the trip begins with a walk by the savanna and into in the forest, located at the skirt of the Auyantepuy. Skirting up the river, among stones, two stops are made at two jumps, one is the Tawanaremba, where we can have the opportunity to get a refreshing dip and the daring persons swim against current, until the cascade. After enjoying this stop, we will continue up the river until arriving to a small lagoon, for those who wish they will be able to go across it swimming and for those who do not, they will cross on a native canoe denominated “Curiara”. We arrive to the other side, where we get into an impressive crack that leads to the Kavac Cave; there we can take a bath at the foot of a 65 mts. high waterfall that comes from the Auyantepuy surface. This whole journey has duration of two hours approximately. Once the trip finishes we return to the camp to have a rich lunch. We take rest. In the afternoon we Visit to the Indian community to buy typical souvenir and to watch the spectacular sunset. Dinner and overnight in hammocks.

Day 06 After breakfast we fly to Canaima in a small airplane Cessna 206. We will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the landscape that is shown through the window. Arrival to the Cañon del Diablo (Devil’s Canyon), passing by the Salto Angel (Angel’s Falls), the world’s perennial highest waterfall (975mts). Once the waterfall is observed, the plane will head towards Canaima. We land in Canaima Airport. Once we are in the airport we will be taken to the Canaima Tours Camp, where we will be able to change clothes and carry only what is necessary to start the excursion. We will be taken for a ride in “Curiara”, name that is given to this indigenous boat. During the journey through the Canaima Lagoon a beautiful natural landscape is sighted and where the Ucaima, Golondrina, Wadaima and Hacha waterfalls, the reddish color of the water and the hydroelectric plant stand out. We walk through the forest to watch a variety of trees, flowers and birds. Then we arrive to the top of the Sapo Falls where a panoramic view of the Tepuyes and savannas can be appreciated. We walk through the inside of the majestic Sapo Falls to observe its water fall. Afterwards we walk by the forest until arriving to a small river where we can enjoy a refreshing swim. Return to the camp to take a delicious lunch.
