First day:
Welcome at Simon Bolivar International Airport, depending on
the arrival time, we will continue the trip to Puerto Ordaz
or we will stay at a hotel in Caracas.
Second day:
Departure from Puerto Ordaz at 9:30 (in the morning), just
after breakfast towards the Bolivar State south, passing by
the Guasipati and El Callao small villages, where we will
visit the Peru gold mines, with the possibility to buy in
stores cheap jewellery and gold nuggets. Going on another 41
Km. to the south, we will stop at Tumeremo, another mining
village, to have lunch. We will continue the route by Las
Caritas and San Isidro community, known as Km. 88.
The next
stop is at La Piedra de la Virgen (Virgin’s Stone), only 15
minutes away, one of the powerful granite rocks, at the
Canaima National Park gate, where you can admire the amazing
and vast forest landscape. After crossing the Lema Sierra (mountain
chain) of about 42 km. long, through the dark tropical
jungle, suddenly, you can watch the Gran Sabana’s amazing
landscape.
After
another 50 Km. we reach to the Kama Meru waterfall with an
altitude of 50 metres. You can have dinner at the camp’s
restaurant and stay overnight in cabins with mosquito net
beds.
Third day:
Departure at 9:30 a.m after breakfast towards San Francisco
de Yuruani. Here we make a transfer to a four wheel drive
vehicle, from this point we continue on earth roads to
Paraitepuy de Roraima. It’s one of the last villages that
can be accessed by car means. From here we start the route
to Mount Roraima.
After lunch
we start our walk, depending on the good shape and condition
of each one of the tourists, as it lasts more or less 4
hours until we reach the first camp at Tek River. We can
swim in the river and enjoy a nice meal.
Fourth day:
Today’s objective is our base camp at the foot of Mount
Roraima which has an altitude of approximately 1.800 mts.
During the way, we will cross the Kakenan River, and if we
have enough time we can swim.
The length
of this excursion is more or less from 5 to 6 hours and we
will take a rest to have lunch. From the base camp we will
enjoy the beautiful view over the Sabana and its Tepuys. (Tepuy
is the indigenous word for plateau)
Fifth day:
At 9 a.m. we will start the ascent to Mount Roraima located
at an altitude of 2.800 mts. This is one of the exhausting
but also interesting parts of the journey. In about 4 hours
(depending on the weather and tourists conditions) we will
go through tropical forests, we will cross streams with
crystalline waters and a thin water fall. In our way we will
find an impressive flora.
Once we
reach the top of the plateau, we Hill go to the rocky caves
known as the Hotels, proper places to camp. After lunch we
will have a break time. During the afternoon we can arrange
short walks.
Sixth day:
After breakfast we will start our excursion on Roraima
Plateau. The Tepuy surface is mostly of sand stone and due
to the erosion (through centuries, these stones got
impressive shapes (most of them ancient rock concentrations,
generally metamorphic, formed by granite blocks). During the
trip we will find curious plateaus and caves, little rivers,
an endemic flora and fauna, and a crystalline quartz ground.
There are
two possibilities of taking a route in one day:
1.) A 5
hours walk, to a place at the edge of the plateau, called
“El Abismo” (The Abyss), where you can watch if the weather
is fine, an impressive view of our neighbour the Kukenan
Tepuy and the rocky wall of Mount Roraima.
On the way
we will pass by particular rocky formations of the
crystalline quartz valley (made up of quartzites and
sandstone with some thin slate beds, it’s an important
plateau shaped tabulated relief, showing a totally flat top
and vertical walls from where beautiful waterfalls plunge
down) and natural pools with transparent water, where you
are welcome to take a swim.
2.) The
other possibility would be an 8 hours walk to the triple
point, place where the borderlines of Guyana, Brazil and
Venezuela meet each other.
Seventh day: After breakfast, approximately at 8:30 a.m. we
will start the descent. We will have lunch at the base camp,
we will take a one hour break and we will continue our way
to our first camp by the Tek River. Here we can have a nice
swim.
Eighth day: At 7:30 a.m., after breakfast, we will return to
Paraitepui where our transportation with snacks waits for us.
We will have lunch and take the road towards Santa Elena De
Uairen. We will have dinner at a nice restaurant, and the
overnight will be at a nice local hotel. |
